It's just most people aren't deep enough in the lore to care about the characters (imo the main draw of game) and the gameplay isn't really interesting enough to be the reason to start playing. My impression from my more normie, Go playing friends is that masters is for more advanced pokenerds and the gacha aspect turns people off.
