After replaying these games, I've come to believe its the presentation - the visuals and music - that really gives these games all their charm. It's really nothing else. The region is meh, Kanto feels like a stupid addon that drags the overall game down, the level curve is ridicuously bad, the mon selection is bad (way too many gen 1 mons early on), the gym leader teams are awful.
It's all about the graphics. That's basically it. That's where all the good vibes come from. And I admit, it goes a long way. But the gen still feels shitty overall.
