The boat is the best example of buildings anticipation in the entire series, and when I saw how bad ORAS fucked it up I just about dropped the game immediately.
You're taken on this boat ride that clearly shows you a bunch of trainers and side areas that you can't access. In fact, you have no control at all between selecting a destination and arriving. You're a passenger.
Later, after you complete the entire quest around Western Hoenn and beat your dad, you finally get Surf. Now the world is your bitch. All the previously impassable water is now explorable space, and you immediately remember the long-ass water route you weren't allowed to roam through before.
Because Hoenn is built and traversed cyclically, you've actually come back around to the exact area you first took the boat ride, right as you unlock Surf out of battle.
It's fucking perfect design and the complete lack of it in the newer games is why no one cares about the new regions.
