Gen 3 brought things back up to code with some of the best designs we've ever had. Gen 4 was a bit of a dip with weak legend designs and some questionable crossgen forms, and gen 5 basically felt like a chinese knockoff of gen 1 but managed to have some great mons just by virtue of sheer volume. Gen 6 and 7 proceeded to knock it out of the park with an overwhelming proportion of great designs not seen since gen 1 and 3.
I have high hopes for gen 8.
