The first thing Oak tells when speaking directly into the player about the world of Pokemon is that people care for them like pets or use them for battles, I'm aware they changed it to companions in the final release of LGPE but the point still stands. Thinking about rights and such goes against the spirit of the franchise.
Even when taking into account something like Alakazam there's an episode in the anime where the thing is used as a beast of burden by being used to move rocks like an ox.
