I'd sit there with my big ass FRLG guidebook that had the type chart and pokedex in the back and quickly flip through the pages to try to find the typings of the pokemon I was facing. Naturally it didn't have gen 4 pokemon so I guessed that on my own.
It was generally my introduction to the deeper autisms of the mechanics, since obviously I'd look up how to make a good team and found some competitive resources with IVs/EVs, held items, abilities, all that stuff. PBR might not be a good game in total, but it was certainly an important key in my pokemon journey™
