It is the basis of many myths and religions, the problem is that people see Pokemon as animals, when in reality they are more like monsters, spirits, deities of our world or an equivalent.
In Japan, it is culturally assumed that there are people with a kitsune or tanuki ancestor, in China they are dragons, in Ireland they are snakes, in Mexico it is Nahual (a type of Skinwalker)
But more importantly, they are stories from a fictional world. People ship Disney's Arthur with a humanized squirrel and nobody gives a shit.
