Just charge your phone to 100% and leave the house if you are going to go to a specific area to play for a extended period of time or battle a gym before a raid boss drops for that guaranteed 1 hour of gym slot protection, and before you open the game/app when you get wherever, plug in the portable battery pack to your phone, open app/game, and yeah. It helped with my old Motorola, but the motherboard and main cpu/gpu, fuck everything internal,. was well known to overheat online, but it is a pretty fast and reliable phone with a 2-3 day lasting non removable battery, so yeah.
