Even though they pull the legs close to the body in flight, even though the proportions look more squat when perched, those limbs are looooooong and gangly compared to the body of the bird. Barn Owls have especially long legs compared to other owls because they hunt in open space with tall grass: the extra reach makes it easier for them to nab rodents among the stems. P.S. Their talons are crazy sharp even compared to other raptors, their vision and hearing are impeccable, and their wingbeats are essentially silent. Perfect predators.
