The names weren't localized yet, and they came up as random letters and symbols. I choose Squirtle. When he evolved, the game called Wartortle "Fg-M". For some reason, I decided "Fg-M" stood for something it obviously couldn't have.
We got to Brock before decided to wait for a better translation, which I didn't get until I actually bought the game when it came to the US. I'll never forget that Wartortle, though.
