Majora's Mask did an amazing job of making festive environments and music sound eerie and dark.
For example, in
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SW3dVTL5bm8 , the music starts out bright and cheery, and as it goes on, it get's more gloomy, then creepy, then full out evil at the end.
You should try to kinda follow that, except make the cheery part only last the first 20 seconds or so, then have the same meleody/tune as the cheery part, but make it sound creepy ( as in the link starting at 1:40) for the majority of the song, and mix in some entirely creepy parts (as in the end of the linked song) every so often.
