I think Hop's existence points at a big issue in Pokemon. It's about time we have scripted losses/battles that are too hard to win, and differing outcomes (instead of default whiting out when a loss happens and time rewinds) depending on whether you win or lose. You should lose a battle and be able to or forced to continue with the story. It cheapens Hop's character and his rivalry with you when you are always guaranteed to win. Some people end up not caring about the term 'rival' in Pokemon anymore because, there is literally no consequence to winning or losing.
