WOTC and ADV cards are expensive because the kids who grew up with them (me) are now adults in their 20s-30s with expendable income and nostalgia boners.
Gen 2 - Gen 4 cards are expensive because Pokemon popularity dipped and cards weren't printed as much.
Modern is expensive because shiny chase cards and youtube/instagram/reddit hype.
Gen 5 and 6 are decently cheap still for singles, because most of them look like shit, but sealed is getting expensive.
