I started with Emerald when I got my first gameboy (SP when I moved to North American in 2002)
After Emerald I played Colosseum, then LeafGreen. I wouldn't trade that route for anything in the world and I think you'd like it too.
To this day, Colosseum hold a special place in my heart as tied for my favourite pokemon game. It is so unlike the original formula, unknown region, new villains, darker/mature story, such an awesome vibe.
After saving the Orre region, I suggest you come back to the roots and play LeafGreen/FireRed, then go Diamond/Pearl/Platinum, then come to arguably the best games in the franchise (HG/SS).
Then chronologically just go Unova, Kalos, and finally Alola.
