You can criticize these in terms of the quantity of other locations, which is completely fair as older games on worse hardware had more, but then by doing that you would have to acknowledge that reductions in both interconnectivity, as well as location amounts also occurred from 4 to 5, and 6 still shouldn't be held responsible for that.
In general, I don't like the idea of labeling things areas as straight lines.
