I like shitmons because they the are the toggle of the game's diffculty. If I feel like playing on hard without having to download some gay romhack I'll just stick to using shitmons with set battle style and maybe even handicap myself further by not using items in battle if I want an even bigger challenge. I played FireRed once with just two shitmons in my party and without grinding to overlevel any pokemon, it was enough to give me a tough time against the elite four and Blue. I had to actually strategize and use stat boosting moves. Felt really good to win.
In my opinion the biggest reason pokemon games are easy is that most opponents simply don't have pokemon with good moves. You are hours into the game and keep fighting the same unevolved pokemon, sometimes evolved ones, that only have garbage moves that they learn at low levels. If I were to play a romhack, I'd only want to play one that makes opponents in trainer battles actually attack and use decent moves. It's ridiculous to fight a level 40 Golbat that only knows astonish and confuse ray when you're about to face the elite four.
Most battles that are popularly considered difficult in the mainline games are against opponents who simply have decent moves and use them instead of spamming fucking string shot.
