I mean we all did, Pokemon was everywhere, it was marketed out the ass. But I think that's just it anon, it's the nostalgia that we're attached to not the designs.
We're trying to hold on to something that is meaningful to use because of WHEN it was not WHAT it was.
We see modern Pokemon designs the same way our boomer parents saw gen 1 designs, as unintelligible crap.
We see it that way because we aren't kids, it's not this new magical thing we had never encountered before, it's just a hobby -it's mundane.
The truth is that Game Freak has gone through so many different design philosophies over the years they've abandoned even attempting consistency.
I bet if asked they'd explain it away by saying something like:
"Animals in the real world don't follow a core design principal so why should Pokemon?"
Except they'd say it in broken English with a really thick Japanese accent.
