The blueish steel branches helps hold down branches loose pieces of wood it's picked up from the ground for the use as camouflage and armor. This way it can adjust it accordingly to its current habitat. It's a suggestion anyway. Or maybe the branches hardens over time similar to a crustacean's shell, and the more mature Pangolash' got almost entirely steel branches.
