>>49222942>redundancy and feeling the need to repeat older trendsThere are only so many ways you can cleanly and simply design commonly known animals. For this obvious reason, you have overly designed Pokemon and redundant designs.
In terms of power creep and Pokemon occupying the same niche for battles e.g. stat-wise; that's a symptom of the series' mechanics stagnating.
Now then, since Pokemon has:
>Gone full 3D>Committed to never having every Pokemon in a single game again>Is willing to experiment a la PLAI expect gen 9 to bring major changes/improvements to the battle system and thus refresh the personality of individual Pokemon. Possible innovations could be:
>Pokemon having more unique and interactive abilities instead of having them be totally passsive>Pokemon having unique animations which can have a direct consequence in battle>Pokemon interacting with the environment in more specific ways - in and out of battleThis stagnation that you describe has definitely come to a head and will probably be addressed at some point, but I'm sure PLA will come out in a coupe of weeks and bring me back down to Earth.
