"Smash bros clones", and "arena shooter revivals" fall for the same exact thing. The vast, vast majority of your playerbase aren't going to give a shit about these systems, and won't give a shit about competitive autism. Most of them are going to just go through single player stuff, and play some stuff with their friends. When you don't have PVE, and make PVP become a full time job, or a competition of who read the wiki better, people check out quickly, and will go back to something more familiar/reasonable.
