Granted, there are certain themes one could pull off that wouldn't make them all forgettable, like each team focusing on a particular stat, strategy, or other game mechanics. I also wouldn't be opposed to introducing more strong trainers in general that aren't leaders or champs, where beating them nets you rewards like early access TMs or whatnot.
That said, type specialists are still something I look forward to regardless of how many gens we are up in. I'm up for changing the formula, but don't remove them altogether.
