If anything the problem with the genre is the sheer amount of work it requires. You have to design a bunch of monsters and make sure they're appealing to people, program the battle system and make sure it's very satisfying to play with, make interacting with the monsters nice, design the world, animate each monster and their moves, etc. It sounds like typical game dev stuff but I do believe Monster Catching games are the hardest RPGs to make. We call Gamefreak lazy but a lot of DQM games reuse music, GF makes new tracks every game, on a schedule with how they release games. It doesn't sound like much, but still.
