Essentially, don't try to look exactly like what you're aiming for. In general, it's kinda always an uphill battle. Figure out what kind of character a certain pomekon is and interpret that into what a person would wear.
Avoid overly traditional interpretations of gajinka like the plague. Unless yer a rail and willing to wear close-to-nothing, don't attempt kawaii. Cuz kawaii ain't cool.
