First games I ever played, I remember restarting over my brother's copy of Gold over and over trying to get past the second rival fight with just my Quilava (did not work out for me). I didn't actually end up owning my own physical copy of a Gen 2 game until I was like 18, but I did end up playing through most of Gold on an emulator when I was 10 the year before HG/SS came out, the Lighthouse sticks out in my mind for some reason.
And then of course a bunch of fond memories of HG/SS, enjoying the Pokeathlon, going out for walks on the Pokewalker grinding steps, being so happy to just walk around with my bros following behind me. But I still preferred GSC aesthetically and musically, probably the best the games have ever looked and sounded relative to what else is competing with them on a system.
Playing through Crystal right now, will get Stadium 2 by the end of the year and see what I missed out on from the N64.
