Digimon was brought up, and I think that franchise (at least Tamers and Series 1) handled the balance between the magical creatures having character (most flawed in a good way), and develop while also having the humans with character (most flawed in a good way), and develop them along the way. No one lost their humanity and everyone felt like actual friends and companions.
