>>38568710It's overall harmless and inoffensive. It's great for Pokemon fans because Pokemon, a bunch of easter eggs, and unique spins on it. Set design is also pretty well done, the vaguely cyber punk aesthetic is nice, and the performances are OK, though Bill Nighly as
Mewtwo was an unexpected but welcome touch.
Detective Pikachu's real main problems is that it's a buddy cop detective movie, but if you're older than 8 you can immediately tell who the bad guys and red herrings are. The movie could've benefited with a touch up of the script, and make the mystery more of an actual mystery. Not-Pokemon fans should overall be fine, the only questionable stuff is the
Mewtwo stuff may go over people's heads at first, but they should catch on quick.
Overall for Pokemon fans it's a unique and fun spin on the series, and for general audiences it's a good enough family film. Outside of CGI this ain't winning any awards, but it's far from bad or appalling.
