You already have "choice" on the game so having even more "choice" does not have as much impact.This would be a better argument if Pokemon were a bit better balanced, but try building a team that's not an absolute laughingstock on every single level and you'll quickly find yourself looking at the same 15-20 options absolutely everyone else is. Not all of the Pokemon in the game are usable. Many aren't fully-evolved and are damn near worthless even with Eviolite. There's only about a dozen and a half fully-evolved Pokemon for most types now (even less for some like Rock/Poison, Rock only has 12 fully-evolved Pokemon total) and given how much weight Pokemon gives to diversifying your team of 6 in both type and role those options are going to start shrinking fast.
This was the case in some of the older gens too, Gens I-II especially, but in this case I don't think the comparison is a favorable one.
