Mallow cried with her mom's ghost as the sad piano music swelled because I ended up crying my eyes out for 10 minutes before I could recompose. This shit cuts deep if you lost a parent around the same age as when Mallow was portrayed. I've seen sad Pokémon episodes/movie scenes before, but never before had shit gotten that real. Going into SM with only the games as my prior exposure, and getting zero spoilers beforehand aside from the League outcome, Mallow being the most relatable character for me was something I really didn't expect.
