Regardless of their hate, it was clear effort was put into them as Game Freak was trying to reinvent or put a new spin on their regular formula, without changing it in any drastic or radical way. Which is why it was the first gen since 1 to have 151 brand new Pokemon in it, and took more of a focus on character and story than any other game before it had, and ramped up the stakes with the climax taking place at the league, and having you boss rush the E4 and then N and Ghetsis on top of that.
And what did all of this get them? It got them gen 5 going down in history as one of the most infamous and polarizing games they've ever made. Apparently people dont want new Pokemon, but want nostalgia pandering low effort cash grabs with lots of flashy gimmicky bells and whistles like megas, alola forms and UBs that dont actually have any substance to them.
They've also stopped caring and are only pandering to nostalgiafags for a quick buck, and dumbing the games down for smart phone generation audience appeal.
