Adults tend to be more discerning with their purchases. Granted, this is one of the most consumerist franchises on Earth, but there's a reason it's well-established that kids are more or less the most profitable demographic to shoot for. They're dumb and impressionable, and they will kick and scream until mommy or daddy caves and buys them whatever they want.
Then those kids grow up with the franchise and they either becomes mindless lifelong consumers or they become disenfranchised ex-fans like many people on this board. Thing is, those people don't matter in the long run because kids didn't suddenly stop being born.
Is it shitty? Sure, but it makes good business sense.
