I was sitting at my desk, checking my phone, waiting for things to do, and when I had Pokemon Go open, I got notified of an egg hatching
and out came this little guy - an Alolan Sandshrew
keep in mind that this was a month and a half since I started caring about Pokemon again (hatched october 5) when I realized I had Pokemon Go downloaded when I was on a week-long vacation, so I was utterly unaware about Sandshrew having any regional forms, or what color its shiny form was.
I immediately realized this was the cutest thing I ever saw and four days later, when I went to the beach, I set him as my buddy and took some photos of him, and eventually got enough candy to evolve him which made him somewhat less cute but a lot cooler, and it prompted me to collect every sandshrew I could, never releasing any and also making a few of them that I evolved into viable gym attackers. Especially Snowstorm.
And to top it all off, Sandshrew Community Day happened on my birthday, which was an amazing gift on its own.
This also caused me to learn about pangolins after reading that Sandshrew/Sandslash were based on that animal.
