Look at the fall of Yugoslavia. After Tito dies the countries decide to do a rotating leader. As soon as it's Serbia's turn they try to make him leader for life. This pisses everyone off, Croatia decides to leave. War is declared. Bosnia, caught between the two decides "Fuck it, we wanna leave too". War is declared. Despite being allies and fighting against Orthodox Serbia together, Bosnia is Muslim, Croatia is Catholic. War is declared. Warcrimes ensue from all three parties, but mostly the fucking Serbians because all of Yugoslavia's military stock was there. Despite this, they have the shit pummeled out of them and Croatia enacts its own warcrimes in retaliation for warcrimes. They go back to bitterly despising one another like they did before they ever tried unifying, which was a fucking marvel in the first place since the Croatian Ustacha were genociding everyone else around them during World War 2, and all three of these countries, as well as Albania, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Hungary and Slovakia having been the fighting grounds for the Ottoman Wars, where Austrian and Ottoman vassal states slaughtered each other non-stop for two hundred years.
And since then parts of Serbia have split off to become their own countries about as big as the average backyard because they hate each other that much.
