I don’t think pokemania is dead. I think it’s still there.
I haven’t felt it since winter 1999. My brother would steal me the little keychains with the poke balls from his job at Burlington Coat Factory. The first movie just came out and every Tuesday my parents would take me to Burger King. I didn’t socialize much, but I felt so happy. Surrounded by fellow Pokémon… what’s the word? Fans? Lovers? Everyone has a different relationship with the franchise, no matter when they got in to it.
Some of you felt the peak around the time Ash battled Gary in the Silver conference? I remember being on vacation in San Diego and seeing a big poster for a Pokémon tournament in some museum. It had the Sinnoh final starter trio on it. I’m sure for someone, that was when the franchise peaked for him.
2016 was a huge year, Pokémon had a fuckin Super Bowl commercial.
Pokémon Go was huge.
A lot of normies adore that summer. And I can certainly see why because those hot summer days, those normies became our fellow trainers.
Pokémon is timeless and pokemania is a state of mind.
