I don't know how well this works out, but if your friend is in need for a certain type to cover his ass in a battle, and you know the mon you're lending him has some degree of trust in his/her abilities, why not? Sort of splits the burden of having to raise and care for an entire party, at least when you're just starting out. You'll probably go your separate ways after a while but it'd be a crutch of sorts.
