I also think the digimon anime did not work together with the games (this can be impossible) like the pokemon anime and games work together.
Also pokemon has more of a game-tastic idea of you going around and capturing monsters, while the digimon anime shows 1 mon for 1 human.
If the franchise committed to basically massive digimon capturing from day 1 it be more popular. Something the later anime series actually did. However digimon did have its legacy of the V-pet origins dragging it down.
