It's retarded logic, because it's not that it's hard for children to wrap their minds around items unlocking event quests, it's that most children don't know how or where to look for distributions. They're advertised very poorly, I didn't get my hands on an event Pokemon until Colosseum's Bonus Disc happened, and I only knew to preorder that because it was actually advertised on TV. Most event distributions don't get that kind of advertising. Most children aren't going to be checking serebii or some other Pokemon fan website every day for news of event distributions.
Basically, I'd wager just as many children are missing out on the events just handed to you as they did back when you actually had to do in-game shit for them. Hell, the in-game shit probably got them talking back in the day. I know it did for me when I was a kid. But Gamefreak is retarded, this is no secret.
