He thinks he's the protagonist.
He's not overly mean, but he's condescending in a way you can tell it's him being condescending and not the game just spurting "WOW, YOU'RE REALLY GOOD AT TYPE MATCHUPS". In Easy Mode, he chooses the Pokemon weak to yours because that's how a rival matchup should be, the protagonist having the weaker starter. He refuses to call you by your inputted name (except for a touching moment at the end of the game), constantly giving you silly, belittling nicknames.
The team in this hypothetical game are on the darker side, closer to Plasma. As Rival-kun is the hero, he naturally bursts into their hideouts to try to take them down. As he is 11, he fails miserably and makes everything worse for the adults who were trying to covertly infiltrate. He does this a few times throughout the game, trying to "redeem" himself, until he finally figures out he's being stupid.
His team consists of his starter, any new Pokemon Game Freak guesses will be "cool" among the younger crowd, and Charizard and Lucario.
