I would probably still live my normal life and have a small number of petmons from stuff I could catch or trade for locally. I'd probably have tried to adopt a Mareep from a local farmer and raise it through my school years since I liked that line as a kid anyway and it'd be useful to have around with much of my work based around electrical systems. Then probably a route 101 rodent or forest-dwelling fluffball that would be fairly easy to keep around the house.
