Not to put words into anyone's mouth, but I think that a juxtaposing dynamic is what had many people interested in these sorts of characters. I would argue that rather than grabbing attention by being expressly cute (i.e. young age, vibrant color palate, innocent/naive nature, etc) or overly sexual (clothing choice, aggressively salacious), most characters in this thread draw crowds because their admirers note a mismatch between them and themselves or their dispositions and their roles or surroundings. That hang-up generates intrigue, and intrigue can lead to affection.
