Unless you are a piratechad you don't actually play a game before you buy it. Sales are less a reflection of the quality of the product than the result of things like aggressive marketing, the quality of the previous games in the franchise and some unrelated aspects like whether this is or isn't the first game of the series in the console (all games the were the first to be released in a specific portable/console had boosted sales). On the other side post-sale engagement is derived directly from people actually enjoying the product they bought.
