gen 6 may be blander, and maybe worse in a fair amount of objective aspects, but its hidden trick is that it’s RIDICULOUSLY replayable. The extremely varied regional dex combined with the relative ease of the game means you can easily get a playthrough done in sub-20 hours with whatever mon you’d like. if you want to turn off the exp share or otherwise challenge yourself, there’s plenty of room for that (albeit in the sort of BS way with unwarranted difficulty spikes and a fair amount of grinding)- depending on how you limit yourself, XY can easily be the hardest in the series, save for maybe USUM
also I personally prefer megas and amie to z-moves and refresh, wholeheartedly, and wonderlockes are really really fun
