Here's some advice on how to make a gay character, coming from a gay guy.
1. Take a character, no matter how insignificant or major to the narrative, at any point of development, or even after the character is established
2. Just say they're gay, like flipping an on/off switch
It's literally just that easy. In fact, I think having a character "suddenly" become gay like soldier 76 is an interesting way to introduce straight audiences to the concept of coming out and how it can color how people precieve you. Demanding a gay character be a good or fleshed is a concern trolly way to suppress them in them in the first place. And if it "kills" them for you or if if you just see them as a ploy that's more on you IMO
