Sorry about your bros OP, it sucks but the only thing left to do is hack your 3ds (switch too if you have an old enough unit since you mentioned Home) and start keeping backups from now on. Remember the rule is at least 3 copies in at least 2 formats and at least 1 of those backup copies should be off site in case the worst were to happen and fire/flood/ect destroys everything you have.

For example since pokemon are such small files that don't have multiple valid file formats to save out to (as opposed to an image you can save as a .png, .tif, and .pdf among many other formats to avoid issues with compression or file type support) you might want to have an uncompressed copy of everything in both individual .pkm files and your entire saves in a folder - if your game/emulator has an issue loading your save you can use the .pkm files to inject the individual pokemon into a new save you know is working - as well as a .zip or .rar archive so you've got an even smaller single file with everything in case you have to rescue them off shit bandwith/connection. Then you want those backups stored on an external hard drive, a micro sd card you can easily pop into your 3ds/switch/phone/ect either as is or with a micro to full size sd card adapter, and a copy that is totally separate like on an encrypted drive you keep in a safety deposit box or mail to someone you trust (solid state drives will survive frequent trips back and forth better than hard drives) or on a cloud storage service like dropbox or backblaze if you're comfortable with your data being on those servers in exchange for being always accessible from anywhere although that puts you at their mercy like with Bank. Any storage hardware you use for backups should be used EXCLUSIVELY for backups - don't plug it in unless you are actively backing up or retrieving data, live copies aren't backups but having copies on more devices won't hurt as long as you keep track of everything and use version control.

I understand servers aren't free so this would have been the expected path if they still cared, but they clearly only care about money now. Honestly for how little data it is per user they shouldn't even charge for bank/home in the first place, especially with online now requiring a subscription in general and cloud saves already being part of it.
