I know this sounds crazy, but lets have a look at the evidence
Exhibit A: Here we can see Sophocles trying to ride a Tauros while Lillie desperately runs away
Exhibit B: I'm guessing Sophocles immediately challenges Ash to a Pokemon battle, trying to be cool and shit
Conclusion: Sophocles clearly has some self-esteem issues and that's why he seeks approval from his friends, specially from Lillie.
