Crystal is still my favorite, even over HGSS
Nostalgia maybe, but I love the unique sprites of the GB/C era that didn't look exactly like the anime. To me, the anime drawings are bland and stale looking while the old sprites had personality. I also liked the colors a lot more, they were bolder and more distinct while most everything currently looks desaturated. And black was actually black and not purple or gray.
I love the Johto region and its mysterious atmosphere, the ruins of Alph, the whirl islands, etc
Loved the Bug Catching Contests, the day/night system, and almost all of the new monsters. Heracross, Skarmory, Scizor, Steelix, Tyranitar, Murkrow are still some of my favorite designs ever.
The music was just the right blend of soothing and eerie
And of course having two regions was great, even if they were both gimped. I was really disappointed to find HGSS didn't do much of anything to alleviate this.
