I read a simple HTML spoiling Red being in Gold and Silver before they released complete with sprites (and the big head Charizard from the into), so I wouldn't call the early days entirely pure. I don't remember anything else so I don't know if I deliberately ignored or forgot any context given.
I think a good part of it is a large swathe of people playing these games far longer they they should be (t. guilty) and simply getting old to see how the sausage is made. While I do think the game design has faltered in real ways, Game Freak has always been making these games for young kids coming in fresh with any hangers on being extra. They've just changed how they've gone about that, and of course going 3D clearly made whatever their process is harder in places.
And if nothing else, RGBY sold 30 million copies. Nothing is sacred.
