Is he like a sexually active guy? Do you ow whether or not he needs that romantic part of a relationship? If not then I'd say go for it, but you need to be willing to lose him as a friend.
If feelings come out but they're not reciprocated, then you really just shouldn't be friends anymore and just move on. It only make things worse and end up hurting more than it does now. It's super hard and really painful, trust me I fucking know, but in the end it'll be for the best.
