Well, let's see:
Adding Fairy-Types to fuck over Dragons and give Steel and Poison an offensive presence was one of the smartest decisions modern Gamefreak will ever make. I will die on that hill.
XY's monster design is great (pic related is GOAT), while the dex variety is the best it's ever been. The game is highly replayable, which is always worthy of merit.
The easily-accessible online services and access to easy breeding, super training (and injecting) created a fresh competitive renaissance following the weather wars and was probably the best online community we'll ever see in this franchise.
But there's an absolute fuckton of cut content and everything I hate about Sun and Moon can trace its roots to its predecessor. Characters and constant worthless cutscenes give me Dire AIDS, XY's soundtrack is forgettable, route design is abysmal; its graphics are the definition of a polished turd, and can barely compete with games released over a decade prior.
Overall, it's a 6/10 game that brings a lot of good ideas to the table that are then overshadowed by glaring, amateur design flaws. XY's biggest tragedy was being rushed to release in order to work on Sun and Moon, which were in turn rushed to release for the 20th anniversary.
