Once I saw how fucking strong Gyarados was in this game, I just had I feeling I should just feed him most of the experience and rare candies and he would melt the game by himself. I was 100% correct and Matte Kudasai destroyed everything, including the E4 and Blue, with some support from the rest of the team so as to not risk anything silly happening.
Since I figured I didn't really need 6 Pokémon to get thru to the end, I also replaced Starless (Dodrio) with Moonchild (Wigglytuff) before going in so as to honor him for carrying my ass earlier in the game.
Compared to my Red run, this was a piece of cake, most likely due to getting a better team overall. I'm sorta glad, since that meant I could breeze thru the game. Now to play Yellow (probably with randomized wild Pokémon so I don't go insane with the lack of variety).
