The current system literally is making every trainer you encounter an EXP vendor.
The battle isn't there, The fact you get a full team EXP share, means you can run with one pokemon and your team will keep up.
They tried to remove the grinding of the game, which they did really well. So all were left with is steam rolling through the story. If you lose to a trainer in a route who wasn't a important NPC then you were probably training a weak pokemon up or had low HP.
There is no challenge in the game is all i'm saying. Grinding isn't fun, but they could have made it feel like an actual journey.
TLDR: I agree with you, but I don't think it would have made the game too difficult to play.
